Are you Lucky or Unlucky?
What is LUCK and does it exist?
According to the English dictionary, the term luck is defined as:
1) The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; fortune.
2) Good fortune or prosperity; success.
3) Ones personal fate or lot.
The different approach people have towards the meaning of luck and the impact it has on their lives are quite varied and ranges from those who claim, on one hand if it can’t be supported by scientific means, it’s not true, to the alternative view that use of certain rituals, amulets and charms, etc. to avoid bad luck and to invite good fortune do work. Then there are those in the middle who believe luck is simply an abstract idea that cannot be controlled or changed by anyone or anything. Just like that fact that you cannot pick or control the circumstances of your birth, you cannot control or choose other occurrences in your life such as selecting winning lottery numbers, etc.
Every culture throughout the world has its unique list of superstitions, rituals and lucky charms. Some have their origins lost in the mist of time and carry on from one generation to another, while others, such as human sacrifice, for instance, are long forgotten. Each culture also has its share of lucky and unlucky numbers. The number 7 is considered as a lucky number by many cultures including the Japanese and most of the Western cultures not forgetting the Gypsies from ancient times until now. Thirteen has long bee considered an unlucky number. For that reason, hotels around the world do not have a floor 13, many people will avoid house numbers, bingo tickets and anything with the number thirteen in them.
You only have to observe people at various venues such as bingo halls, football matches, casinos and you will see for yourself many contemporary luck rituals in use. You will witness people wearing their lucky clothes and shoes, seating in their lucky seat, surrounded with family photos, cuddly toys, horseshoes or/and four leaf clovers and a lucky rabbits foot in their pocket.
I’ve been “accused” of being Lucky many times. Some days I laugh about it, other days it annoys me. Yes, I certainly would consider myself a lucky person, because I have managed to completely turn my life around and experienced amazing life-changing success over the years. In fact, for a long time I considered myself very unlucky, as a teenager growing up on the road with no permanent place to call home and not being able to read or write and seeing the non-gypsy lads of my age living a very different life of course I felt I was VERY un-lucky. Then one day over in Ireland at the Ballinasloe Horse Fair which we visited every year (I was 16 years old at the time) whilst watching the Blacksmith busy at work shoeing one of our horses, an old Gypsy lady came up to me and thrust something into my hand and whispered in my ear “Keep this safe throughout your life and it will open many doors which otherwise may have been firmly closed to you”. What she gave me was a ‘Lucky Charm’ a small gold hand, a charm that has served me well over the past 50+ years, so well in fact that some years ago I decided to have copies made which I called my ‘Golden Hand of Friendship’ and according to many the hundreds of testimonials I have received it has also helped a lot of other people around the world too. To this day I have no idea who the lady was who gave me the charm as I never set eyes on her again.
So, do you believe in Luck? Are you Lucky or Unlucky?
I would be most interested to hear what you think, after all this is the only way I can write about what interests you. Please leave your comments below.
Until next time ………….
